Rossi estimates that the cost of energy made with this system will be below 1 cent/kWh, in case of electric power made by means of a Carnot cycle, and below 1 cent/4,000 M J in case of thermal power production for heating purposes.  That is several times cheaper than energy from fossil fuel sources such as coal or natural gas.

I saw that stuff earlier today.  Looks very interesting.  I hope the fact that it's coming from the University of Bologna doesn't taint its credibility!

The "Paper" is on the Journal of Nuclear Physics website.

Quote
Abstract
A process (international patent publication N. WO 2009/125444 A1)
capable of producing large amounts of energy by a nuclear fusion process
between nickel and hydrogen, occurring below 1000 K, is described. Ex-
perimental values of the ratios between output and input energies obtained
in a certain number of experiments are reported. The occurrence of the
e¤ect is justi…ed on the basis of existing experimental and theoretical re-
sults. Measurements performed during the experiments allow to exclude
neutron and gamma rays emissions.

Quote
4. ConclusionsIn conclusion, our process and apparatus is the …rst and unique system,
existing today, able to obtain energy from nuclear fusion reactions; furthermore,
because the ingredients are Nickel and water (to obtain Hydrogen), this is an
endless energy source for the planet, without emissions in atmosphere.

I read the patent as well, what I found most interesting was the process whereby the nickel catalyst underwent transmutation to copper plus the energy in dropping to the lower energy state. I think this is a bit of a pandora's box for many industries and the physics community as well. Consider the consequences of transmuting one element to another at will and also liberating vast amounts of energy to drive the same process, anyone could have the proverbial Midas touch, lol. Very interesting

I read Sterling's articles but I didn't read any papers.  The big claims about being in the process of creating a one-megawatt version of the system that consists of a few hundred production modules makes me wary.  That takes a full engineering development group to do that with lots of individuals in the organization and there was not a whiff of that in the articles.  I always thought that cold fusion involved squeezing hydrogen into helium and it's the first time I have ever heard of fusing hydrogen and nickel together to make copper.  Also, they only claim to have empirical results and have no theory to explain the alleged process.  That doesn't sound right to me.  Finally, the key guy has been in jail but I don't know what for.

The Italian group is promising real systems by the end of this year.  We can always hope.  I assume that there is enough Nickel in the world to give us practically unlimited energy if it is true.

In conclusion, it should be underlined that the copper nucleus thermal perturbation, as a result of its mechanical backlash(heat), is transferred to its encompassing nickel lattice and propagated, by in phase phonons (G. Preparata),

Thanks wings!!
So they do have a theory,Or an understanding!
Sounds like the boys are playing with acceleration! and perhaps the "C" word [Cavitation].

I dabble in Precious Metals stacking and occasionally hang out on the Kitco Gold Forum.  There, it is the hobby of some to hoard US nickel coins.  Like the pre-1982 pennies, the nickel now has well more raw metal value than its face value.  It is said the the copper cents have over 2 cents worth of copper in them and nickels have 7 or 8 cents worth of nickel, plus some copper.

Maybe this is another good reason to hoard nickels!  If it turns out, the commodity-market price of nickel might go "To Da Moon".
