I agree. And this missing knowledge is above all that of the method. Some people in the education sector are realizing this. They recently had my daughter, a science journalist, intervene in high schools across an entire region, to explain to young people how to avoid the traps of Internet charlatans (for example, those who sell stones and crystals to boost your health and morale!). The problem affects all fields, not just scientific and technical. Democracies have reached their limits: equality under the law, which is quite legitimate, is now understood by many as total equality, so you're as smart as a Nobel Prize winner. What's more, the less you know about a subject, not even the scientific method, and the less you've studied, the more open-minded, curious and inventive you'll be, because your mind isn't formatted  . So you don't know anything about the subject, but you give your peremptory opinion on everything, an opinion that's as definitive as it is useless and generally wrong, as can be seen every day on social networks.
