Many years back, a European Van was shown, and the engine ran on a reel of aluminum wire that made Hydrogen and Carbon Monoxide fuel that was tested many times and Patented. The small motor fed wire under electrolyte solution to a rotating carbon cylinder. Underwater scraping Sparks from 40 amps 24v DC produced both fuel gases bubbling upward. The sediment settles to the bottom of cell mounted in the engine compartment. It would be nice not to have to purchase expensive aluminum wire. The feeder was similar to the normal welding mechanism. The write up was also published in Industrial magazine. How to melt scrap aluminum and form/ draw out wire to use? Aluminum is very reactive with electrical valance of plus 3.
A standard power generator with engine had also operated on a water cell. The 2 carbon rods sparked underwater, forming carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas. The engineers said this was possible for self running, since water contains deuterium/ heavy water in very small degree. (Faucet water has 1/5000 ratio of Deuterium molecules to water.)

Indeed, the aluminum-water reaction was understood since the early 1900's.

Canadian engineers have developed a 2MW self-sustaining reactor that produces zero emission, zero carbon, and zero waste hydrogen from recycled aluminum and water. Aluminum metal readily reacts with water at room temperature, forming aluminum hydroxide and hydrogen. The reactor only requires a small amount of energy to start up, after which the system is a self-sustaining operation and a net generator of power to the grid.

The reaction is 2Al + 6H2O = 2Al(OH)3 + 3H2 or aluminum + water = aluminum hydroxide + hydrogen.

It also opens up another possibility, the only thing preventing the aluminum/water reaction is the oxide layer protecting the aluminum. However if something like a plasma reaction removed the oxide layer in an aluminum engine using water vapor then it could produce hydrogen. In effect, the engine could use it's own aluminum parts like the carb, intake and head as fuel.

Can a plasma remove metal oxide layers?

Plasma cleaning is an effective and efficient technique used to remove metal oxide layers. This process can be used on a variety of surfaces, including those made from metals such as steel or aluminum.

Indeed it can, this is why it's important for FE researchers to leave no stone unturned and not jump to conclusions. It also shows the importance of long term testing versus 10 minute video clips.

I think it's a pretty cool effect, why we could even recycle all our used aluminum pop or beer cans as fuel...
