Group: Administrator Hero Member Posts: 3217 It's not as complicated as it may seem...	Hi Guys. I know I've been remiss here, but things are looking up for me. Renos will soon be done, and I'll have time to work on some of my test gear. Once I'm in good shape there, I have several projects lined up. Having some real bench time is going to be a treat, as I quite enjoyed it when I was testing/debunking the RA circuit (funny they are still at it, and on both sides of the fence. Expect not only some TPU research, but a few more tutorials as well. Power measurement is a biggie, and IMO has not been fully and completely addressed. Group: Guest	Glad to see life is fairly normal for everyone and some enjoyable bench time is coming. Yesterday, my boss asked me how I was doing with my home project (he knows I am a HAM and electronics/EM experimenter and I've been reorganizing my whole basement.) I said it was almost done. New equipment, design/build some I couldn't acquire, calibrate, organize benches and parts, etc. He said, good, I only have one word for you. 'ROADTRIP!'. So here I am at 4AM packing a bag and gear into the car.

Love them road trips, especially when you get to drive out 4.5 hours one way to a remote mountainous region to replace 3x 32V, 10A glass fuses (that should have been 250V), and a RF PA deck that all got taken out by a lightning strike. Group: Guest	I remember the days when one trip was about 1000 miles one-way. I drove it because I could arrive faster than taking a flight. Things were a bit worse then. 1000 miles straight through. The Telco lost utility power and the generator was failing. It took me five minutes to see the generator was just fine. The only problem was a blown metering fuse. A BBS1, if I remember correctly. I drove home after a four hour nap in the car. The site electrician was fired. He lied when I asked him if he checked the fuses and measured voltage at the generator output. Well, I was on my road-trip, fixed the problem and was packing to go home. My boss sent a message to head straight for 'fried green peanut country', S.C. I flew by home anyway. I'll be crossing the Pacific and the equator sometime Monday You can have the road-trips

I've subscribed! @WW, well, I've probably done 1/1000th the number of road trips you've done, so I'm not too fed up with them yet. Group: Guest	I used to travel around the world teaching for a software company. Trips were minimum 1 week, sometimes 2 or 3 weeks in a row. One year I was away 50% of the time. I couldn't do a lot of serious, indepth research when I was always getting preempted for weeks at a time. After a dry spell staying put, it looked like the trips were going to start up again. I looked at my bank account and decided I could afford to change my lifestyle so I could stay put and focus more on experimenting. Group: Guest	Get the traveling done when you are young. The money is good but not good enough. I guess I'm just tired of fixing things that would be just fine if left alone. Damned eggheads think the book has all the answers. They 'think' they know but they should just wipe with their 'sheep-skins'. Maybe I'm just an old fart but I could stay home during holidays if these piss-ants would keep their experiments in the lab instead of 'improving' something they aren't capable of understanding.

Group: Guest	I take it your communication systems work is on more conventional equipment? Not much of my radio work is related to terrestrial comms. In fact, very little is related to radio, anymore. It's more like, whatever the locals couldn't and the providers give up on - then they call. At least there is variety. Everything from cam/cam follower logic to ancient VAX to the latest PLC or MS WindBlows crap with an occasional up/down link adjustment that caused the system to go carrier only. A funny one is where new rules required stripping the inside of a room and repainting with static prevention paint. Stuff had conductive micro-spheres in it. I'll just say the ceiling got hotter than normal and the paint turned to dust. Printed circuit boards don't like dust. Especially when it is metallic powder It was like sticking a piece of aluminum foil in a microwave oven.

Group: Guest	Good thing I had my yellow fever shots. The bugs here are so big they have hydraulic shocks and tandem wheels for landing gear. I wonder if they use standard collision avoidance.

Trying to fix the problem caused by the overzealous owners selling Georgia Power some big-assed poorly-designed SMPS to apply cathodic protection to the water jacket of a reactor chamber at Georgia Power (nuclear power plant). WW, maybe you've been there"? A $2 9V battery would have been more than sufficient to do the job. Nice folks there anyway. Group: Guest	The donkey insisted on the window seat. BAH! GP in ATL? Not sure. I designed the diesel generator switchgear and generator controls for a nuke plant near Atlanta about 15 years ago. Also supervised the commissioning. But then, I did Indian Point just before it went through the China Syndrome. Man! Cell service on this flight. This rocks!
