Hi All,

It's almost fall, and temperature is droping down to 50's already in the morning.

Last winter was as low as -15deg, so I started to build this big rocket mass heater with a 6" feed tube.

I got enough wood to last two winters, but to burn it in a efficient way, the rocket mass heater is the best way to burn it.

Must be tough at -15 degrees...

I don't put wood in the burner until at least -30 to warm the shop up to -15 where I can work comfortably.

I also don't plug my car in until at least -50 because it runs great and last winter it only got down to -30 here in Fox but the reader board at UAF showed -56 in town.

Just curious if you guys build with 2x2's or 2x4's? We don't use anything smaller than a 2x6 for small construction for like outhouses.

...and yes... I am poking fun at you about the cold. I love Alaska & dearly hate the cold but not enough money to snowbird it for the 3 months of winter...

Nice job Tommey.

I have an Aurora cast iron wood burning stove that seems to eat wood like there is no tomorrow.

They say the efficiency is 60 % or more.

I wonder what the efficiency of your rocket stove is....probably a whole lot better.

Wonder how we could do some accurate measurements?

I found that once the heat melts the entire surface of the  galvanized pipes to a dull gray zinc finish, the emissivity goes way up and you can  feel the difference just moving your hand (some distance from) the dull gray to the shiny parts of the pipe.

Your output pipe may never get hot enough to melt to the dull gray zinc unless you separately put a good fire into it.

Paint has trouble sticking to the shiny galvanized but no problem with the dull gray.

Hi Ion,

I used 2x4x12" in an hour of running at 300+ degree, but I will try do get some better numbers when it get cold.

I believe the rocket mass heater use about 1/4 the amount of wood then these wood heaters today.
