So far I really like the navigation. I guess you can delete my post if it is going to be main document. I have never seen these videos and so far they have been pretty revealing. Anyway should I use the shout feature to talk to you guys? Also one thing that I noticed earlier was that I couldn't PM? I may have have over looked something or maybe this feature is not set up yet!!!

You have been doing some great build work, it would be great to see some pictures, i know you had a Hairpin which was amazing. Peter

Group: Guest	Yes Stew, be CAREFUL with your new scope around HV stuff my friend! I know it would ruin my christmas if I zapped my scope. The rules I use with HV devices are: When HV is on I only use scope probe as a sniffer antenna, a few feet away on the bench. I only probe the device when the HV supply is off and all caps have been shorted with a copper brush (large guage stranded wire spread into nice brush taped to end of plastic rod.) Left hand in pocket or at least hook left thumb into pocket when adjusting a live HV device or discharging HV caps. @Peter I also have one of those USB DSO, I use it for the spectrum analyser function, mine has a "hantek" badge on it, capable of 150 million samples per second so useable bandwidth of 75MHz. The probes that came with it are really nicely made. Love the ease of getting screen grabs of data. « Last Edit: 2009-12-15, 12:05:13 by Fraser »

Full Member Posts: 209	Thank you for the info's guys! Don't worry only sniffing and low voltage for my scope. I have reworked the hairpin into something else...not finished yet. I want to test the circuit like Don does ie with a center tapped coil! I also want to learn how to change frequency, electromagnetic induction/resonance and oh yah...how to use my new scope. I figure I will be working with basics for a while as I don't have a lot of time anyways.

Yeah, that meter looks pretty much the same as the one Peter and I bought, the Tonghui TH2821A, about $200. Full Member Posts: 209	Thanks for the advice Poynt! I was actually looking at that LCR meter but I read a few reviews that said cheap and flimsy body/stand, really bad battery life! I did see it on ebay new for like 100-150$

In a sense, it is portable... if you don't mind having the meter permanently connected to ac line... for you won't be able to charge the battery. 'Kind of defeats the purpose of portability. The manufacturer knows about the problem and will try to convince you otherwise by including errata in the Operation Manual, which states: "The battery will be charged when the meter is power-on by using DC adaptor power supply". Don't believe it. I have checked two new BR2822 and both suffered from the same problem: no battery charge. If one attempts to operate the meter off-battery juice anyway, then there is another feature lurking behind the twisted bends of the software code: The instrument shuts down every 5 minutes or so, regardless, whether it is being used or not. Imagine pressing the power button some 12-times an hour WHILE you keep working on your project. Customer support is non-existent: you won't hear a word either from the local US distributor Kaito Electronics or from polite (mum) MCPCH headquarters in Shanghai. The case is made of a low-grade, cheaply finished plastic, and it shows. The back recliner stand flexes easily even upon very modest force exerted on the push-buttons. Perhaps, to compensate for the excessive flexing of the stand, the included Kelvin leads are stiff, making the work with small components rather awkward. There is a large infra-red window on the top side of the enclosure despite none of the models having any IR communications capabilities. If you don't mind the permanent umbilical ac cord or listed idiosyncrasies, the meter does the job: comparison with a new, calibrated Protek Z9218 instrument confirmed accuracy of the BR2822. There is another look-alike model TH2821A having similar specs to BR2822 but made by Chongzhou Tonghui Electronics, or whoever the true OEM of both meters is.

EDIT: a similar patent is 4260933 by Jerry Volland Looking for a straight Xenon Tube, but he says that any ionizable gas and mercury or sodium vapor can be used - this means that just about any arc lamp or gas bulb can be used including neon bulbs and the mercury and sodium lamps in my shop. Recall that Dollard used an argon bulb in his Tesla transmitter demonstration in place of the top metallic terminal. Would one have to break the glass to get to the quartz envelope or will the glass pass the good stuff too? I'm asking because I have a couple of mercury bulbs on hand.

I have some mercury, sodium, and metal hydride lamps and I think you'll need to break the glass to get closer to the quartz tube. Do not look at a lit bulb without glass as the UV is nasty. Per the patent, you need the capacitive caps on each end as well as the outer can (which forms a cap with the ionized gas as the other plate). Why is the efficiency is increased when this arc-lamp-crossed-capacitor device is used in the circuit? Pavel states that the "relative condenser" formed by the caps (30 and 32) over the electrodes (24 and 25) oscillates and the "absolute condenser" formed by the ionized gas and the metal envelope (36) reamins constant. He adds that an oscillation is present in the "absolute condenser" if the caps (30 and 32) are removed and the efficiency is greatly reduced. So, it appears the the "absolute condenser" is always "charged". Does the polarizability of a gas increase with pressure?
