It's turtles all the way down
Here I will continue work on what I have renamed the Gravity Toy.

Smudge, you said:

In the Bessler wheel the regauging can possibly be by swapping falling energy into spinning energy.

I have also long believed this may be possible

Since gravity is a vertical force I maintain, until proven wrong, that we might be able to regauge if we stay within the vertical force field and accumulate spin energy in that direction rather than just simple free fall.

Conventional wisdom says a ball rolling down a ramp can never climb higher on the up ramp and the oscillation will damp out due to friction, and even if we reduce friction to zero and operate in a vacuum, the best we can do is break even.

Same for a pendulum. I believe these designs cannot break unity because they both cut laterally across the gravitational flux, rather than working directly in the vertical and integrating the spin into angular momentum.

For that reason I have conceptually designed but not yet built this Gravity Toy to see if regauging is possible.

I posted this on the Bessler thread, but since it is not Bessler, I am posting it here on my bench for further discussion.

I have some interesting ideas regarding how to construct the toy without a threaded rod, which I will show later.

For now here is the toy for discussion.

And a fun read and something similar here:

ION,

I think your idea has merit if it is first driven through several cycles to start things off.  On a single pass the spinning mass achieves angular energy of value slightly less that mgh (as some energy remains in its small vertical velocity).  That will not in itself get it back to the top.  But if initially driven it could reach the top with spin energy remaining and then it might be possible for it to get another boost of spin energy on its second fall so now it has spin energy of value almost 2mg.  The only problem is this needs something more complicated as when it reaches the top it is spinning in the wrong direction.  It needs the thread in the spinning wheel and on the vertical rod to magically change from right handed to left handed, then it can gain more energy on its second fall.  That magical change of thread between alternate passes is not impossible but would need quite complicated mechanisms.

Hi Smudge

Thanks for commenting. I was hoping that enough spin energy could be accumulated such that it would just reset the system. In that case, the weight has given up all of it's acquired momentum and starts the next cycle with no spin on the weight. This all hinges on the notion that if the axle is long enough, something magic can happen. That notion is founded on the other notion that working strictly in the vertical and aligned with the gravity pull, rather than cutting across it can possibly yield some positive gain. (also a little Aspden effect possibly thrown in)

Axles can be threaded in both directions and in that case the changeover mechanism is very simple, something like you've seen on very old fishing reels to wind and unwind the line linearly in each direction with auto direction change at each end.

edit: after a bit of searching I found out it's called a "traverse roll mechanism"

see video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fv-2Yl2A_KE

some call it a self reversing screw:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UbnvtJ2qMk

I've already worked up a system that does not require that the axle be threaded, rather the weight will have in it's hub spring loaded ball bearings whose contact angle can be varied or even reversed to an opposite pitch to get the effect you are talking about.

What you describe would be the ideal, where a little bit of leftover spin could be accumulated into the next cycle and the wheel could then continually gain energy.

I'll post that design when it is finished.

Regards

Hi ION

I would like to contribute, but my mind is with the !other! project, and i just cant seem to think about anything else ATM.

Just wanted you to know that although i am not much help here ATM,i am watching with interest.  O0

No problem Brad, this is just what happens when you are confined to the couch for a while with a bad cold. I won't be doing much on this until I can get a long traverse screw and test the basic premise. Short of that I will have to see if the other idea will work, which doesn't need any lathe machining.

I am following with interest your work on the buoyancy engine, and going smaller is a good idea.

Best of Luck in this
