You can do useless work, useful work, or store the work for later. In the hhop gen 4 model useless work would equate to squirting the thin high velocity water jet into the top tanks liquid surface. This would disturb the water and move it until the kpe was used up and it became still again possessing only gpe. Useful work is done on the water wheel paddles (external to the system, harvest kpe of a moving mass) which via the alternator stores this work as electricity at a typical loss of 90% efficiency.
