more a void in my understanding].

I call them "anode tufts" sometimes. I think they are places on the copper where some contamination or surface defect causes local breakdown and ionization, before the rest of the system is at low enough pressure to glow all over. The chamber just has residual air, no special gases, and is pumped down to 30-60 microns or so by a 2-stage vane pump (from Harbor Freight!) In the slideshow, there are many "electric universe" kinds of phenomena that are turning up. The picture of the sphere in normal light shows a very Mars-like surface in miniature, from the effects of electrical discharges on the surface of the sphere. (The sphere is a chrome-plated cast-iron ball sold as a "chinese hand exerciser" thing in pairs with chimes inside.) The discoloration, pitting and other surface features make it look a lot like the surface of a planet. Other images in the slideshow are showing solar photosphere and corona type effects from the sphere when it is negatively charged and at high power.
